What Is a VPN and Why Do You Need a VPN for Your PC
A VPN is a virtual private network, and you can learn more about the way they work on our “What Is a VPN” page. The basics are relatively simple to understand. VPNs consist of large numbers of servers connected into a single network, spread around a variety of locations across the world. This allows you to effectively mask your personal and private data while online, including your IP address.
So why should you get one for your PC? Simply put, VPNs are the best way to stay safe online. Depending on the network’s features, they can encrypt your usage information, bounce you around between different IP addresses, allow for torrenting (or sharing files between groups of users), and even unlock streaming services that are restricted to specific geographical areas.
Speed and Security Are Key Factors When Choosing a VPN for PC
Speed is usually a crucial factor to think about when you’re choosing the right VPN for your needs. Some of the fastest VPNs on the market reach into the 300 Mbps range (though see the data on Hotspot Shield below, as it’s the fastest we can find). Typically, 100-200 is a decent speed for these network connections. Often, VPNs work a balance between speeds and security, as high security can come with slightly slower speeds.
You’ll want to make sure that whichever VPN you select has adequate security measures in place to protect your privacy from hackers, advertising companies, marketers, and others. Most of the best VPNs use protocols called WireGuard or OpenVPN, while ExpressVPN uses its own (reportedly even better) Lightway. You’ll also wand to make sure your pick uses the right encryption methods. We recommend AES 256-bit encryption, which is military-grade.
Which VPN Is the Fastest and Most Secure for PC?
Below, we’ve gathered our picks for the most high-speed VPN and the most secure one. Of course, every VPN is different and emphasizes different kinds of services. Before making your choice, look into how it performs in reviews like this and others on our site.
Fastest VPN for PC’s
Hotspot Shield is the fastest VPN we could find. Its speeds, unlike the vast majority of VPNs on the market right now, can top out at over 400 Mbps. With that kind of firepower, you’d expect it to suffer in some other areas, and that is usually the case. Hotspot Shield has suffered in the past from allegations of poor security and encryption. If it can sort those out, you might see it on our Top 10 list in coming years.
Most Secure VPN for PC’s
ExpressVPN is our pick for the best VPN on the market, and it’s also the most secure. As we said, it uses its own Lightway protocol that is reportedly even better than the top competitor, WireGuard. It has AES 256-bit encryption, which can take even the fastest extant PC millions of years to brute force. It also provides an effective kill switch that disconnects you from the internet as soon as you lose connection to a VPN server. With ExpressVPN, users understandably have a high expectation on security (and it delivers in spades).
How to Set Up a VPN on Your PC
Setting up a VPN is as simple as visiting that company’s website, paying for a subscription (usually in monthly, yearly, or multi-year increments), and following the on-screen instructions. Once you’ve installed and downloaded the software, the VPN client should pop up and offer default configurations. For example, it usually has a button that will connect you to the best server at the moment using an algorithm that takes into account the speeds of available servers and your geographical location.
Veteran users and the more tech-minded may want to go into the nuts and bolts, manually selecting servers, changing which protocols are being used, and performing similar adjustments.
Do Pc’s Come with VPNs Built In?
VPNs are available by subscription, so they don’t come built into a computer. Whether you’re using a desktop, laptop, or other type of computer, you’ll need to pay for a subscription and download the client. However, most VPNs work with a variety of operating systems, such as:
- Linux
- MacOS
- Windows
- iOS
- Android
Some even have installable extensions for the most popular web browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.
What to Consider When Choosing a VPN for Your PC
There are so many elements that make up the VPN experience, so you’ll want to take your time when selecting the right one for your specific uses. For example, new users may place a high value on a simple, understandable interface. Businesses or users who plan on dedicating their computer to work may be more interested in VPNs that are ultra-secure. Regardless, we recommend looking into a variety of features when choosing a VPN for your computer.
Ask yourself some of these questions:
- Pricing. Does the pricing structure work for your budget? Can you sign up for the often cheaper per-month price for long-term subscriptions, or will you pay on a month-to-month basis?
- Speed Are you going to be spending a lot of time waiting for the VPN to download important webpages? Are its average speeds good enough for your needs?
- Security Is this VPN secured through 256-bit encryption? Are its protocols up to date, or does it rely on older, more exploitable ones like PPTP?
- Privacy Has the VPN upgraded to RAM-only storage? Is it located within a country that requires it to have logs, or is it a no-log VPN? Have its privacy policies been verified by external audit?
- Support If something goes wrong, do you trust the support system of this VPN? Does it offer live chat, troubleshooting guides, email support, etc.? What do other users say about its customer support response times?
- Server Size Is this a large enough server base to support your needs? If it doesn’t have a lot of servers in the network, will you be able to unblock the services you’re looking for?
- Features What is this VPN good for? What kind of features can you use? Does it offer configurability so that you can adjust its parameters as needed? Does it allow for simultaneous connections through a single account? How effective are its streaming service unblocking capabilities?
The best VPNs have an all-round good showing in all these categories. While many VPNs are good at a handful of features, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice much in any area. If the one you’re looking at purchasing doesn’t tick a lot of the above boxed, you might need to look elsewhere.

The 10 Best VPNs : Full Overview
1. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN is widely considered the best VPN service on the planet. It uses its own Lightway protocol for the utmost security, high-level AES 256-bit encryption, and is one of the few VPNs that has recently upgraded to RAM-only. This helps keep your information safe because all data is automatically deleted when the servers are rebooted.
Speeds here are above average on the whole, though the VPN doesn’t reach the soaring heights of Hotspot Shield.

Not Recommended for... Money. You’ll need to fork over a decent amount for subscriptions to ExpressVPN. The company knows it’s got the best all-around VPN on the market, and it isn’t shy about charging for those services. Given how many ads we’ve seen for this VPN, it also needs to charge a lot to keep up with its marketing budget.
ExpressVPN Bottom Line
As an externally audited VPN, ExpressVPN’s privacy and security policies have been confirmed. That’s a huge leg up on competition. You won’t find a more reliable, functional VPN on the market, but you’ll have to pay well for it.
2. NordVPN

NordVPN, just like ExpressVPN, is a well known as one of the best VPNs on the market. NordVPN is based in Panama, which is a privacy-friendly country whose laws favor internet users. Since it is located outside the 14 Eyes surveillance alliance, NordVPN does not have to retain any user data. In fact, its no-logs policy has been verified by third-party agencies.
NordVPN is a bit slower than ExpressVPN, with speeds topping out at 100Mbps+, but it is still a serviceable speed for most users. Its security protocols are top-notch, and it is less expensive than ExpressVPN.
NordVPN Key Features
Torrenting: | has torrenting-dedicated servers |

Unblocking for streaming: | effectively unblocks services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and much more |

Not Recommended for... Shorter-term users. There are no three- or six-month contracts here, and we wish there were. Instead, the company is really trying to get more users to sign up for long term contracts of at least a year. That might not work for your needs.
NordVPN Bottom Line
NordVPN has earned its place among the ranks of the best VPNs in the world. It has a larger server size than ExpressVPN, though not in as many geographic locations. What it lacks in supersonic speed it makes up for in usability, easy interfaces, and an advanced customer support system. We also like that the VPN allows for up to six simultaneous connections.
3. Ipvanish

IPVanish is great at what it does, but it does have some issues. Its security measures are high-level, its protocols top-notch. Its main attraction is its unlimited device policy, which many users may think justifies its slight expensiveness. There was a controversy surrounding possible user data logging in 2016, but the company has denied these claims. IPVanish also has an impressive array of servers in over 75 locations around the world, allows torrenting, and has received accolades from some of the top technology magazines and blogs. On these levels, IPVanish ranks quite highly.
Here’s the somewhat bad news. A lack of a kill switch on mobile devices may be a bit of a concern for some users. Its interface, while offering more features and stats than some of its competitors, may have sacrificed user friendliness in the name of providing lots of configurability.
IPvanish Key Features
Storage opportunities: | allows up to 500 GB per user, using SugarSync |
---|---|
Emphasis on customer service: | 24/7 on-site support |
No-logs policy: | the official IPVanish policy is to have zero usage logs, keeping your information totally safe |
Excellent data transfer: | no caps on data transfers, |
App compatibility: | Android, iOS, Windows Linux, Mac, FireTV, Chrome, and routers |
Advanced security: | makes use of highly secure 256-bit encryption as well as OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols |
Expansive: | over 40,000 IP addresses and 1,700 servers in more than 75 regions |
Torrenting: | includes P2P-dedicated servers for file sharing purposes |
No device limit: | unmetered usage and use of SugarSync allows you to use the service on any device |
Free trial: | none, but comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee |
Subscriptions available: | monthly and yearly |
Here’s the somewhat bad news. A lack of a kill switch on mobile devices may be a bit of a concern for some users. Its interface, while offering more features and stats than some of its competitors, may have sacrificed user friendliness in the name of providing lots of configurability.
Ipvanish Speed

---|---|---|---|
Manual connect UK server | 0.9 ms | 55.95 Mbps | 12.25 Mbps |
Manual connect UK server | 11 ms | 52.10 Mbps | 10.99 Mbps |
Manual connect UK server | 13 ms | 44.96 Mbps | 10.81 Mbps |
Manual connect UK server | 127 ms | 44.92 Mbps | 9.86 Mbps |
Manual connect UK server | 148 ms | 46.22 Mbps | 10.95 Mbps |
Manual connect UK server | 58 ms | 46.22 Mbps | 10.95 Mbps |
Quick connect JP server | 429 ms | 31.29 Mbps | Mbps |
Manual connect UK server | 358 ms | 29.10 Mbps | 7.24 Mbps |
Not Recommended for... User trust. IPVanish is not RAM-only, has a shady history of possible data logging, and has not been externally audited. It needs to fix these problems as soon as possible to stay on this list.
IPVanish Bottom Line
IPVanish is especially suitable for those of us who have worked with VPNs before or are familiar with their inner workings. Configurability is high, though that might put off some new users. Though it still has some work to do to re-establish trust in its privacy policies, its encryption techniques and protocols are top-notch, its speed is nothing to sneeze at, and its unlimited device connection policy is incredibly generous.
4.CyberGhost
CyberGhost boasts an impressively large network of available servers, takes security seriously, has strong pro-privacy language in its policies, is located outside of a 14 Eyes surveillance alliance country, and offers a complete array of features. While its short-term pricing structure is at the high end for VPNs, it’s worth the money. Plus, it clearly incentivizes long-term subscriptions, with its year-long and three-year subscription packages prices at extremely low monthly rates.
There are some issues with the VPN, though. It hasn’t been audited by an external agency, which means all of its strong language about privacy is just that: talk. Without an audit to back it up, users may distrust the company’s boasts about no-log policies and various security measures. Plus, some of its more in-depth features require a working knowledge of VPNs that many users may find confusing.
CyberGhost Key Features
Dedicated torrenting profile | P2P supported on every server |
---|---|
Data logging | Strict no-logging policy |
Money-back guarantee | 30 days |
Number of servers | Over 338 |
Top download speed reached | 70Mbps |
VPN locations | Over 40 countries |
Maximum devices supported | Unlimited |
24/7 live chat | Yes |
Plans | One month, one year and three year plans available |
An award-winning VPN with unlimited device support
CyberGhost Speed
Connection | Ping | Download Speed | Upload Speed |
---|---|---|---|
Manual connect UK server | 45 ms | 79 Mbps | 67 Mbps |
Manual connect UK server | 34 ms | 67 Mbps | 55.99 Mbps |
Not Recommended for... Certain locations. For example, it has been blacklisted in China. If you’re from there, you won’t be able to use this VPN.
CyberGhost Bottom Line
This is a solid VPN. We highly recommend CyberGhost for your virtual private network needs. That said, just like others on this list, it needs to upgrade to RAM-only storage on all its servers and should get an independent company to run a full check on its no-logs and security policies. That way, more users will develop trust.
5.Surfshark

Surfshark is a comprehensive VPN that offers a wide range of unique features like CleanWeb and NoBorders VPN masking. It is easy to use, based in a privacy-friendly location, and has an impressive array of over 3,200 servers in 65 countries. Couple this with 24/7 support, an external audit to confirm its security and privacy claims, and unlimited device connections, and you’ve got yourself a perfect mix of VPN offerings.
On the downside, there are some reported glitches with Surfshark’s kill switch that we’d like to see improved for added safety. There is also no information about whether the VPN can be used on routers, nor is there a list of firmware requirements. However, if you’re just looking for a VPN for your computer, you can’t go wrong here.
We didn’t have any issues unblocking Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, but Windscribe does struggle to unblock some of the British streaming apps such as BBC iPlayer and ITV Player, partly due to the fact that it’s not clear how many servers Windscribe actually has access to. It’s important to note that Windscribe only works on desktop and browsers, which means it won’t be much use if your primary way of watching Netflix is through your PS4 or TV. Thankfully, if you are watching through Chrome or Firefox, you won’t have to worry about any annoying ads or malware, as Windscribe has some excellent antivirus software included with it.

Not Recommended for... Mobile. If you’re looking for a VPN for your computer, Surshark is great. If you’re looking to be able to use all the features on all your devices, though, you might miss out with this one. We found that some of its unblocking for streaming services was not quite as effective on mobile as it was on other devices.
Surfshark Bottom Line
We recommend Surfshark wholeheartedly as a VPN that lives up to the hype. Its monthly payment plan is rather expensive, but it’s worth it. Plus, if you need to use a VPN for the long term, your monthly fees will be substantially lower (at only $2.49 per month for a two-year subscription).
6.PureVPN

PureVPN is already popular, with over 3 million reported users worldwide. That makes sense, as it offers comprehensive services, plenty of options for customization, a generous 10-connection limit, and effective unblocking services for the most popular streaming sites. It uses the high-level 256-bit encryption strategy and a host of protocols, and it has been externally audited to be No-Log Certified.
There are some downsides, though. Reports of glitchy kill switches and encryption problems with the Windows client keeps PureVPN really being in the top five list of VPNs.

Not Recommended for... Total security. It’s a really good option for privacy, and we applaud PureVPN for getting externally audited as a no-logs VPN. However, it does appear to have a glitchy kill switch that could expose users to threats while online.
PureVPN Bottom Line
If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to unblock Netflix directly through your Mac or Laptop, Windscribe is a cheap and cheerful VPN choice that has been proven to work with some of the biggest streaming services. That said, we did come up against some issues when we were using Windscribe with streaming platforms located in the UK and Netflix didn’t work in all of the country locations.
7.VyprVPN

VyprVPN is all about value. While pricey on the short-term spectrum, its long-term plans are actually quite cheap. The VPN provides in-depth security features, including its own Chameleon protocol for DNS protection. It also uses the same 256-bit encryption that modern militaries and banks often use. In short, it is very effective at keeping your connection secure. Plus, it’s one of the only VPNs that has been verified through independent audit to keep no user logs.
We’d like to see some improvements in the future, though. For starters, it’s time for VyprVPN to upgrade to RAM-only servers, expand the number of servers available, and get audited on a more regular basis. We’d also like to see the company provide a kill switch for iOS devices.

Not Recommended for... Browsers. If you need browser extensions, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
VyprVPN Bottom Line
If you’re looking for a VPN to browse the internet, torrent files, increase your security, or stream shows that are blocked in your area, VyprVPN is a perfect match for you. Even though it might not have browser extensions, and reportedly does not allow cryptocurrency transactions as a payment method, its features are wonderful and its usability is among the best on the market.
8.RusVPN

If you’re simply looking for a cost-friendly way of ensuring your online security, RusVPN may be an ideal option for you especially with its reasonable and fair pricing structure. You’ll also be happy to know that its user interface is simple but still offers a superb range of popular VPN features such as unblocking streaming services like Disney+ and Netflix. Thanks to the company’s top-notch commitment to privacy and security, the RusVPN’s military-grade encryption should provide you with the confidence to surf the web anonymously, privately, securely and safely. Moreover, its headquarters in Dominica will ensure that you can enjoy all these features for the foreseeable future.
Take note, however, that RusVPN may not be ideal for those who are looking for the more advanced features of a VPN. Thus, if you’re planning to use RusVPN for your work or for complex tasks, you may want to reconsider. For one, it has a comparatively small network and its servers do not utilize RAM disks. Moreover, those using the VPN in South America or Asia may experience issues since many of RusVPN’s servers are based in Europe. Lastly, its tendency to suggest servers, pick the protocols as well as engage in other “hand-holding” procedures can frustrate the more advanced VPN users.

Manual connect UK server | 192 ms | 38.92 Mbps | 8.26 Mbps |
Manual connect UK server | 205 ms | 36.59 Mbps | 8.17 Mbps |
Not Recommended for... Configurability. This VPN may prove too on-the-rails for experienced users who want to play around more with the features and settings.
RusVPN Bottom Line
RusVPN has been a top competitor on the market for a while now. It is a bit too frustratingly on-rails to be in the top five, plus its servers have not been upgraded to RAM-only storage. That keeps it on the Top Ten list, but in the lower ranks for us.
9.TunnelBear

TunnelBear is arguably the most audited VPN, with yearly external audits performed by Cure53. We like its dedication to transparency, its lack of any usage logs, and its high level of encryption protocols. However, it doesn’t use the WireGuard protocol currently favored by most VPNs, and it isn’t set up to be friendly to any kind of in-depth configuration or customization.
Also, a huge mark against TunnelBear is its inability to unblock Netflix. That is one of the main streaming sites that causes people to seek out a VPN in the first place, so this is problematic. What it lacks in streaming, though, it makes up for in its torrent-friendliness despite its location in a Five Eyes country.
PrivateVPN Key Features

One of the cheapest ways to access US and Canadian Netflix libraries
TunnelBear VPN Speed
Not Recommended for... Unblocking. It’s not great at providing access to geo-blocked services, especially Netflix. That’s a shame, since this is one of the features most casual users are looking for in a VPN.
Bottom Line
TunnelBear might be the best option for beginning or casual VPN users and those who have very specific features they’re after that are performed well by this VPN. It does a lot of things well, but it also lacks plenty of features and doesn’t have the most up-to-date protection on the market. Check out its features to see if it’s right for your specific purposes.
10.Ivacy

IvacyVPN is a cheap but cheerful provider that can unblock anything you want to watch in Japan, Europe, and the United States with little difficulty. It supports all major platforms, and its excellent compatibility with routers means you can connect to Ivacy servers through your PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles to access Netflix and Amazon Prime Video apps in other countries. It’s simple to use, easy to install, and will protect your devices against most common forms of intrusion thanks to excellent security features like AES 256-bit encryption, DDoS protection, and IPv6 leak protection.
We tested IvacyVPN with all of the major streaming services that are out there, including Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Now, BBC iPlayer and Netflix, and didn’t encounter any issues, even when we were connected through servers in locations such as Japan and India. You won’t have to mess around figuring out which servers offer the best connection either, as IvacyVPN offers an instant connect feature for servers that’ve been optimized for streaming Netflix.

Quick connect JP server | 361 ms | 23.14 Mbps | 1.69 Mbps |
Manual connect UK server | 434 ms | 37.97 Mbps | 5.84 Mbps |
Not Recommended for... Consistency and reliability. Its speed changes from server location to server location.
Ivacy Bottom Line
Ivacy offers some of the best value on the market, with low prices and high effectiveness across the board. In order to break into the top five VPNs in the world, it needs to upgrade its servers to use RAM-only storage and get an external audit of its no-logs policy, security protocols, and encryption methods. That level of trust, combined with its extremely attractive value, will make Ivacy a direct competitor with some of the bigger names like NordVPN and even ExpressVPN.
FAQ
Are VPNs Legal to Use on PC’s?
It is totally legal to subscribe to a VPN. Some countries restrict their usage (for example, China). Others require VPNs to log some forms of data (for example, countries in the 14 Eyes surveillance alliance). But simply subscribing to one is not a crime.
Will These VPNs Work on My Current Operating System?
Yes. These VPNs all have dedicated clients for Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android. Some also include Linux. Check your VPN’s logistical information or contact the customer support network to learn whether it is compatible with your OS before subscribing.
Will These VPNs Run on Other Devices?
You should be able to run these VPNs on devices like smartphones, gaming consoles, laptops, desktops, tablets, and more.
Popular VPNs That Don’t Work with Computers
There are VPNs that have significant security issues, including:
Touch VPN
Onavo Protect
Archie VPN
Hola VPN
UnoTelly
We recommend you stay away from these. Some may not even work on your computer.
Why Don’t All VPNs Work on Computers?
There are VPNs with codes that may not be compatible with a specific operating system. In other cases, the VPN may not work because it is specifically blocked by the app or service. For example, Netflix is notorious for blocking VPNs that don’t mask their usage well. All the ones we listed above, though, should work on most if not all computers.
Can You Trust Your VPN Service?
Every VPN has its own history with user trust. These companies tend to be started by people who believe in a totally free internet and who rank user trust highly. Look for trust symbols like external auditing, no-logs policies, headquarters in a privacy-friendly country without anti-VPN laws, and upgrades to RAM-only storage.
Can You Use Free VPNs for Laptops?
You can, technically. But we don’t recommend it. You usually get what you pay for, and free VPN services are often riddled with potentially unreliable security protocols and encryption techniques. We highly suggest you fork over a little bit of cash each month to subscribe to a reputable VPN like any of those above.
Does Your Laptop Not Work with VPNs? Try These Methods…
Common solutions to a VPN struggling to work on your laptop include:
Changing the protocol you’re using
Choosing a different server
Ensuring you’re logged on to your VPN account
Checking your internet connection through your ISP
Disabling your firewall, but use this as a last resort
However, if none of these work, you should contact the company’s customer support team. Some of the best VPNs also have extensive troubleshooting information online, and you can use that to work out the solution yourself.
Summary
If you have a laptop or other type of computer, VPNs add privacy and security to your online experience. We think the best VPN for any computer is ExpressVPN, though its prices reflect that status. In any event, we’d stand by any of the above VPNs are solid choices for you. They all offer something slightly different, so you should definitely read through the list and find one that truly speaks to your specific needs.
Ivacy is our choice for best value, or “bang for your buck.” It has some speed issues with some of its servers, and we’d like to see it increase its trust rankings. However, it is inexpensive and we love that one of the “little guys” made it onto our list. If you’re totally new to VPNs, you might like to try out TunnelBear. Not only is it more on-the-rails than others (and thus easier to use), but it also has cute little bears that help you through the process. That counts for something, right?
